Modern herbalists agree that the plant is helpful for loss of appetite, upset stomach, and gas„ although it may be better to take the herb before these symptoms occur (such as before eating a fatty meal), rather than after. The herb is also antibacterial. Precautions: Generally not recommended during pregnancy. If you are allergic to artichokes, avoid this herb. Boneset: May be used for colds and congestion. Boneset treats colds by raising body temperature to kill the colds virus, but it also treats fevers by inducing perspiration to lower body temperature. The polysaccharides in boneset activate T-cells to fight bacterial infections. Precautions: Boneset is most effective when taken on the first day of symptoms. Safety for pregnant women, nursing mothers, children under the age of 6, or persons with severe liver or kidney disease has not been established. Burdock: May be used as an anti-inflammatory remedy. Its numerous antioxidants protect the liver from toxic chemicals, allowing it to process the body's naturally occurring steroids which is helpful in achieving hormonal balance. A mildly bitter herb, it stimulates the release of gastric juices and aids digestion. Cilantro: May be used to expedite the removal of heavy metals such as mercury, lead and aluminum from the body. Localized deposits of these metals within the body have been shown to foster the growth of a number of infectious micro-organisms, including Chlamydia trachomatis, herpes simplex 1 and 2 and cytomegalovirus, protecting them from the action of antibiotics and anti-virals that would normally be capable of eliminating them or controlling their virulence. Comfrey: May promote the growth of connective tissue, bone, cartilage, and is easily absorbed through the skin. Precautions: Use with extreme caution. Excessive consumption may be carcinogenic to the liver. Do not use while pregnant. Elderberry: May be effective against influenza. Taken before infection, it prevents infection. Taken after infection, it prevents spread of the virus through the respiratory tract. Feverfew: May be used as a preventative for people with migraines. The bitter taste of this herb enhances appetite and digestion and improves liver function. Relieves pain and inflammation of arthritis, relaxes nervous tension, eases depression and promotes sleep. Helpful for women who are highly nervous and sensitive to pain and may have sudden outbursts of anger. Gold Thread: It may be used as other pure bitters. In New England it is valued as a local application in thrush, for children. Heal All: May be used as for internal ailments. Lemon balm: May be used as a calming, antiseptic and antiviral herb; easing tension, stress and overwhelming feelings; calms and slows the heart, eases nervousness, agitation, palpitations, irregular heartbeat and mild depression. Relaxes spasms in the stomach, lowers a fever and helps cool the body on hot summer days. Lemon balm helps tired minds to concentrate. Apply a lemon balm tincture topically to prevent or heal a herpes sore. Marshmallow: May be used to help with bronchitis, common cold/sore throat, cough, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, stomach ulcers. Red Clover: May be helpful for children and adults with spasmodic coughs, bronchitis or pertussis; eases lymphatic congestion and tonsillitis and traditionally has been used as an anticancer remedy. Contains genistine which is known to inhibit cancer cell growth. Precautions: Use with caution if on anticoagulants and anti-platelet agents or if using oral contraceptives. Do not use before or after surgeries because of blood thinning properties. St. John’s Wort: May treat depression. Precautions: May increase sensitivity to sunlight and risk of sunburn. Not to be used with a MAO or Protease inhibitor. Sorrell: May be used as a diuretic. Stinging Nettles: May be used if iron is low. Has many valuable properties including nourishing tonic for people who feel weak and tired, pre- and post- operative support, restores overall vitality, stimulates liver and kidneys to cleanse the body of waste products, helps clear eczema, and eases and prevents hay fever symptoms. As a non-irritating diuretic nettle leaf helps relieve fluid retention, cystitis and urethritis. Good preventative tea on regular basis for softening or preventing kidney stones and gravel and as a remedy for bedwetting and incontinence. Nettles helps stop nosebleeds. A tincture of the seeds improves thyroid function. Valerian: May be used as a strong muscle relaxant, effective sleep remedy. Eases menstrual cramps, restlessness, emotional stress, nervous irritation, and gastrointestinal cramping.Yarrow: May be used for women‘s issues. Encourages blood flow to the pelvis, clears excess estrogen from the body, regulates length of menstrual cycle, lessen heavy menstrual bleeding and eases menstrual cramps.
